The genre of my “Personal Artifact Essay” would be personal. The genre would be personal because in the essay I discuss my private life and talk about an object in my life that holds a lot of value for me and my family. I talk about my personal artifact which is my family’s car. The whole essay being based on a personal item makes the genre of the essay a personal essay. What prompted me to write about this subject is that the assignment was to write an essay about a personal artifact that you daily use or is overlooked by your family. I wrote about my family’s Corolla because I never thought of it as a personal artifact or of any value other than it being a form of transportation. I realized its value when I took a deeper look into everyday objects around my house because of this essay. I realized it holds a lot of history for me and my family and is also a symbol of my late uncle. What I hoped to accomplish by writing this paper was to tell a story about a personal artifact in my life that I overlooked for so long and finally acknowledged, while explaining its importance and relevance. Another purpose for writing this essay was to complete an assignment that I was assigned. The potential audience for this paper would be my professor because he will read and grade my work, also any faculty in the English department at City College. Another audience would be anyone I peer reviewed my article with when we went over our drafts during class. The relationship with me, my potential audience and my medium that I’m using to communicate with which is my paper is professional. The relationship is professional because I wrote that essay for English class and the potential audience is all people in the school environment. I strictly wrote this paper on a professional level and not for personal reasons. The knowledge my audience and I as the writer share is the information that I put into the writing. The audience now has an insight on my life and some of my family history. Each assignment related to the essay helped me achieve the course learning outcomes. Each assignment was a building block that helped me better my work. For example, the peer review activity gave me new ideas and insight I needed to improve my assignment. My overall reaction to the assignment is that it is very unique. I have never had an assignment like this one before. This assignment made me look into my family history and personal life. This assignment helped me realize the value of everyday objects that I would normally overlook. An artifact does not have to be something that is kept in a box or praised, it can be anything that holds any kind of history. There were no hard parts of the revision. It was all easy because all of my feedback was constructive and helped better my writing. The in-class activities, homework readings and assignments, and class discussions impacted my final product by overall making it alot better. Each homework or activity helped me improve my work in some way which improved it overall.
